Enabling pediatric patients to speak through digital monsters

How can we create an environment of safety and comfort that might encourage pediatric patients to increase sharing of their health data?

MonsterMixer is a project designed for the long term care pediatric inpatient unit at NYU Langone Medical center. During several visits to the unit, I observed pediatric patients who were reluctant to communicate their medically related symptoms as often as the hospital staff desired. I subsequently designed and built a concept that revolved around patient constructed digital monsters that patients could subsequently use in order to "speak" with their caregivers. Patients use Monster Mixer to communicate their current pain level and associated symptoms through a web interface or their mobile phones via text messaging. Hospital staff is given real time monitoring capabilities via a web interface. This project was built as my course final for Hospitable Room (NYU Interactive Telecommunication Program).
